Great resume writing doesn't come naturally to most executives.

WHAT - Business Results Have You Produced?

Both as career executives and as executive recruiters, we have found most executives do a reasonably adequate job of articulating - what - they have done in any particular role. Where many fall down is in being able to articulate the - quantified - business results they have actually produced or driven either directly or indirectly through their efforts.

As a result, much of what comes out of an executive in an interview are statements of effort not anchored against any -quantified- business results. This can be devistating to the interviewing executive - especially for senior level executive roles where you are absolutely paid to directly influence business metrics in a measurable way.

HOW - Did You Produce Them?

This is where 90% of the executives we interview fall flat on their faces.

It is one thing to be able to articulate "WHAT" you've done - it is quite another to articulate "HOW" you did it.

Anyone that is good at interviewing executive candidates has to get past what the executive interviewee has accomplished in their career and understand their method of producing results. WHY? Because -metrics- do not translate from job to job; all they do is confirm scope and scale of experience (i.e., they are simply a check in the box).

The capabilities & attributes an executive leverages to produce quantifiable business results are what truly define an executive's unique career value proposition.


Any executive role has a set of measurable business objectives associated with it (i.e., the "WHAT" with defined scope & scale).
Any business objective requires a specific capability set on the part of an executive to successfully execute against the business objective (i.e., the "HOW").

The job of the Executive Hiring Authority (or Executive Recruiter) is to identify - if - a prospective candidate possesses the required specific capability set necessary to enable the candidate to successfully execute against the business objectives behind the role the candidate is being considered for.

The problem for the interviewing candidate is the fact they've gotten paid to produce - Results. They get paid for - WHAT- they produce - not - HOW they produce the results.

This translates into a typical executive not being mentally prepared to answer questions about - HOW - they produced the results they claim to have produced.

For example, an interview question such as, "I see you drove an increase in profitability of 13-18% year over year. That's great. How did you do that?" will typically produce a response from the executive being interviewed that starts with, "Uhmm..." and is followed by a response typically illustrating the fact this is the first time the executive being interviewed has ever conciously thought about - HOW - they produced the result. This unfortunately is very common and not the way to differentiate yourself in an interview.
